Red lipstick has been a cult classic from Ancient Sumerian men and women to Ancient Egyptians and gained popularity by celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. Today, red lipstick remains a modern staple ranging from many shades and textures with innovative formulations that are long lasting and highly pigmented.
Knowing Your Skin Undertone is Key When Choosing the Perfect Red Lipstick.
When choosing the right red lipstick, you should understand the undertone of your skin. If you read my previous blog entry Choosing the Right Foundation for your Complexion you already have an understanding of how to determine the undertone of your skin.

Let's re-cap determining your undertone:
your skin's undertone is the most prominent colour of your skin when it is bare (without makeup). Your undertone can be cool, neutral or warm.

COOL: Skin has a pink or rosy undertone, sometimes sensitive, may burn easily when exposed to the sun.

NEUTRAL: Skin is neutral or balanced, not too pink, not too golden.

WARM: Skin has a golden or olive undertone, tans easily when exposed to the sun.

Let's go a little further, there are other ways you can determine your skin's undertone such as understanding which clothing or jewelry pieces look good on you. For instance, if you like the way silver looks against your skin then more than likely you have a cool undertone. If you you prefer the way gold looks against your skin then more than likely you have a warm undertone. Someone with a neutral undertone can wear both, either silver or gold.

As far as clothing is concerned, you want to look at which clothing you prefer wearing.  If you like the way blues, greens and cool reds look on your skin that's a pretty good indication that you have a cool undertone.  If you like the way yellow, oranges and burnt reds look on your skin then that's a good indication that you have a warm undertone.  That being said there are 'no rules' as to what colours you should wear it's all personal preference.

Another way to determine your skin's undertone is by looking at your veins. Yes, that's right! The colour of your veins can help you determine your skin's undertone. If they have a bluish hue more then likely you have a cool undertone, if the veins inside your wrist have a more greenish tinge then more than likely you have a warm undertone.  All of these factors can help you understand the undertone of your skin.

Now back to the original topic, 'Finding the Right Red Lipstick'. So, you have a better understanding of your skin's undertone, but you're still not sure which red to lean towards, no worries the chart below will help.

Cool Undertones
For fair skin-tones with a cool undertone, look for reds with a bluish hue. whether you decide to go bold or keep your makeup subtle, a cooler tone red will help to complement your skin tone nicely. If your complexion tends to be medium or more darker in tone, you may be inclined to go with a deeper red instead of one that's bright and vivid, if that's the case you may want to try a berry or plummy red with a cool undertone.

Warm Olive Undertones
